Biography

Born Andre Braugher in Chicago, Illinois on July 1 1962 he is best known for his role of detective Frank Pembleton on the series Homicide: Life on the Street. A role which garnered him an Emmy Award. After his 6 year run on Homicide he starred in a number of movies including City of Angels and the independent film Thick as Thieves.

After leaving Homicide he directed the Showtime production "Love Songs" and later starred in the TNT production "Passing Glory".

More recently he reprised his role of Detective Frank Pembleton in the two hour tv special "Homicide The Movie" and Jim Stern's "All The Rage".

Braugher's other notable feature film credits include "Glory," "Primal Fear" and Spike Lee's "Get on the Bus."

He won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a miniseries in 1995 for "The Tuskeegee Airmen".

Some of his other television credits include "The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson," "Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture" and "Murder in Mississippi." His first television role was as the late Telly Savalas' sidekick in television movies based on the original "Kojak" series.

Braugher has appeared on stage with the New York Shakespeare Festival in "Measure for Measure" and "Twelfth Night" and "Henry V," which earned him an Obie Award. At Joseph Papp's Public Theatre, Braugher performed in "The Way of the World," and Shakespeare's "Richard II" and "Coriolanus." He played Iago in the Folger Shakespeare Festival production of "Othello" and performed the title role in "Macbeth" for the Philadelphia Drama Guild.
Braugher, who was born and raised in Chicago, earned a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.F.A. from Juilliard
