Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1966 he grew up in Yorkville, Illinois. Andy now lives in New York with his wife, writer/actress Sarah Thyre. His television debut was the part of Conan O'Brien's sidekick on the talk show " Late Night with Conan O'Brien" . He was on the show from its beginning in 1993 until 1996. Esquire rated him as the "best of the breed," for his part on the show.In addition to talking with the guests, he performed in the show's comedy skits and would often act as the show's comedic correspondent off the set. Richter and the Late Night writing team have been nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series for four consecutive years and won the 1997 Writer's Guild Award for Best Writing. Richter performed in a number of stage productions in New York and Los Angeles before getting his start on tv. He played Mike Brady in the production of The Real Live Brady Bunch. Andy has also performed with various Chicago-based improvisational groups. His credits include Annoyance Theater, Gambrinus King of Beer, Comedy Underground and ImprovOlympia. He also studied improvisation in Chicago under the direction of Del Close and Mick Napier. Richter attended the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign and Columbia College, where he studied film and video. In July 1997, Richter performed in Incident at Cobblers Knob, a play by Amy and David Sedaris at the 1997 Lincoln Center Festival. In 1993 Richter appeared in Chris Elliott's feature film, Cabin Boy.
