Biography

  Danny Glover was born 22 July 1947, in San Francisco, California, USA, to the film production assistant Mandisa Glover and Carrie Hunley Glover. A relative late-comer to acting, Danny Glover began to take an interest in the stage at age 28, with a few roles in local theater. Upon moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting as a career, Glover continued to find success. Danny first appeared on film Escape From Alcatraz (1979), he only had a tiny role, but was able to work his way into the forgettable Chu Chu and the Philly Flash (1981). In 1980, had a chance to take a role in the pilot of Hill Street Blues. Since he was already committed to a stage play, however, Glover declined his chance to break into television. But Glover's good karma would eventually work in his favor. Not only did he land a small recurring role on Hill Street Blues one year later, but his performance in the stage play earned him a lead on Broadway, which lead to his film debut in 1984's Places in the Heart. Glover's career exploded the next year, with roles in the 1985 films The Color Purple, Witness and Silverado. In 1987, Glover teamed up with Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, which has since spawned three sequels. This great actor has featured in many modern movies including Iceman (1984), Witness (1985), The Color Purple (1985), Lethal Weapon (1987), Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), Flight of the Intruder (1991), Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), Kidnapped (1994), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), Beloved (1998), 3 A.M. (2001), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001).

Danny Glover is one of Hollywood’s most renowned and respected leading men. An actor, producer and director, this versatile superstar has impacted stage, screen, and television for over adecade. Glover is the recipient of several prestigious honors for his impressive body of work. They include two NAACP Image Awards, 3 Cable ACE Awards, the Independent Feature Project/West’s Best Actor Award,the Phoenix Award from the Black American Cinema Society and induction into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. Glover also received an Emmy nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the mini-series“Lonesome Dove” and Turner Network Television's “Freedom Song.”Off-screen, he is a powerful advocate for literacy and has spoken to grammar and high school students around the nation about the joys of reading and education. He was also appointed the first Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Development Programme, and received the first annual William Kunstler Racial Justice Award for his work on a variety of social issues. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Amnesty International and an Essence Award. In addition to his individual presentations focusing on the arts and community involvement, Glover regularly teams with long-time friend and actor Felix Justice in “An Evening with Langston and Martin.”
