An engaging lead of mainstream Hollywood fare since the 1980s. Emilio Estevez was likable as the somewhat goofy greaser Two-Bit Matthews in "The Outsiders" (1982) before gaining critical notice in a cult classic as a belligerent punk rocker turned "Repo Man" (1984) in Alex Cox's surreal sci-fi satire. This son of actor Martin Sheen remained busy throughout the 80s, appearing in three coming-of-age films in 1985 alone and gaining prominence among his co-stars who collectively were labeled 'The Brat Pack'. "The Breakfast Club", cast him as a sensitive high-school jock while "St. Elmo's Fire" saw him play a medical student coming to grips with adulthood. Estevez scripted and co-starred in "That Was Then...This Was Now", playing a troubled youth jealous of his older brother's relationship with a girl. None of these were landmark performances but one suspected that this might be a significant talent in the making, perhaps as a character actor if not a lead.
While still starring in successful if undistinguished films through the late 80s and early 90s ("Stakeout" 1987, "Young Guns" 1988, "Young Guns II" 1990, "The Mighty Ducks" 1992, "D2: The Mighty Ducks" 1994), Estevez has yet to fulfill his early promise. He has attempted to branch out as a screenwriter and director, making his directorial debut with "Wisdom" (1986), a meandering, somber road picture, that featured Demi Moore and Estevez as two young bank robbers trying to help the farmers of America. While the direction was competent (he was assisted by Robert Wise), the film was undermined by an unpolished script. He fared a little better with his second feature, "Men at Work" (1990), an uninspired comedy with Estevez and his brother Charlie Sheen playing unconventional garbage men who try to save the environment. Critics tended to be divided over "The War at Home" (1996) as well, although many felt Estevez had finally proven himself as both an actor and a director. Unfortunately, this well-acted drama about a Vietnam veteran was overshadowed by other releases and failed to find an audience. from movies.yahoo.com Bobby (2006) (filming) .... Tim
