Biography

Even Gerard Depardieu himself has noted that, in terms of looks, he is not a probable candidate for leading-man stardom. It is hopefully not an insult to note that the uniquely visaged Depardieu was an ideal choice for the 1990 remake of Cyrano de Bergerac. And yet, physical attractiveness (or lack thereof) has had no bearing on the success of Depardieu, who was born December 27, 1948, in Chateauroux, France. Onscreen he is the personification of the words "sexy" and "dynamic," with full and brilliant control over his chosen craft.

Depardieu has frequently and convincingly portrayed two-bit street criminals onscreen, roles for which he was no doubt able to mine resources from his own past as a juvenile delinquent. He was saved from a lifetime of delinquency by a social worker, who steered him into acting. In films and on-stage since the age of 16, the versatile Depardieu developed a strong following in France during the 1970s, extending his popularly to the rest of the world with his multilayered performances in such films as 1900 (1975), Maitresse (1976), Get out Your Handkerchiefs (1978), and Danton (1982). He won France's Cesar Award for The Last Metro (1980) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), for which he also earned an Oscar nomination. In 1984, he made his film directorial bow with Le Tartuffe.

Sporadic efforts to make Depardieu a mainstream Hollywood film star with such films as Green Card (1990), 1492 (1992), and My Father the Hero (1994) have fallen victim to spotty scriptwork and half-hearted promotion. However, Depardieu has managed to maintain importance in both the French and American film industries with such films as 1991's Tous les Matins du Monde (in which he shared the screen with son Guillaume), Germinal (1993), the critically acclaimed Colonel Chabert (1994), and The Horseman on the Roof (1995), in which he co-starred with Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez. In addition to his roles in two notable Hollywood films, Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production of Hamlet and 1998's Man in the Iron Mask, Depardieu also served as executive producer for Nick Cassavettes' She's So Lovely (1997). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
