Biography

Leslie Nielsen disproves the adage about American lives having no second acts: after decades as a rather stolid, unexciting leading man, he transformed himself into one of the premiere deadpan comic actors of the 1980s and '90s. The son of a Royal Canadian Mountie, Nielsen grew up on a trading post 100 miles from the Arctic Circle. After high school, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, then began his career as a disc jockey and radio announcer after WWII.

A prolific actor during the "Golden Age" of TV, Nielsen appeared in 45 live dramas in 1950 alone. Among the countless series he turned up on were "Studio One", "Playhouse 90", "Wagon Train", "Dr. Kildare", "Bonanza", "M*A*S*H", "The Streets of San Francisco" and "The Love Boat". Nielsen also made more than a dozen TV-movies, beginning with "See How They Run" (NBC, 1964) and continuing with such dramas and actioners as "The Aquarians" (NBC, 1970), "Brink's: The Great Robbery" (CBS, 1976), as a cop, and "Ohms" (CBS, 1980), as a governor.

Nielsen often played romantic leads or authority figures in films. His first big-screen hit was the sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" (1956). He romanced his way through "The Opposite Sex" (1956) and "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957), and lent his tall, dark, but sometimes wooden presence to such films as the dreadful "Harlow" (1965), saddled with the character name 'Dick Manley'; "The Plainsman" (1966), as Col. George Armstrong Custer; "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), as the unfortunate ship's captain; and "City on Fire" (1979), as the hapless mayor.

The 54-year-old actor seemed pretty much washed up in 1980 when he was cast as Dr. Rumak in the uproarious Abrahams-Zucker comedy "Airplane!". Demonstrating a healthy sense of self-parody and flawlessly deadpan delivery, Nielsen revived his career by doing satirical takes on his earlier, stolid screen persona in other highly popular spoofs. The good-natured actor (who has carried a Whoopee cushion with him beginning 1975 and has reportedly upgraded to a remote-controlled "fart machine") owes much of his latter-day success to his ability to deliver unbelievably sophomoric one-liners with a face so straight that the joke actually becomes funny. (Q: "Surely you must be joking"? Nielsen: "I'm not joking, and don't call me Shirley."). He became a virtual industry franchise with the character of bumbling police lieutenant Frank Drebin, first featured in the next Abrahams-Zucker genre parody, the short-lived TV series "Police Squad!" (ABC, 1982), and its big screen outings, "The Naked Gun--From the Files of Police Squad!" (1988) and its sequels, "The Naked Gun 2-1/2: The Smell of Fear" (1991) and "Naked Gun 33-1/3: The Final Insult" (directed by Peter Segal, 1994).

That series seems to have run its course (partly due to the trials and tribulations of co-star O J Simpson, whose career was shattered by his infamous murder trail), but Nielsen turned to spy spoofs with "Spy Hard" (1996), among attempts to skewer other movie genres. Not all of Nielsen's films were as successful as "Naked Gun": seemingly unwilling to turn down work, he has graced the unworthy "Repossessed" (a 1990 "Exorcist" parody), "Surf Ninjas" (1993), played the title role in Mel Brooks' "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" (1995), and parodyed "The Fugitive" in "Wrongfully Accused" (1998)--the actor also appeared in the non-spoof family comedies "Disney's Safety Patrol" (where he was second billed but appeared in only a few scenes) and "Mr. Magoo" (1997). From 1994 to 1999, Neilsen would return to his roots with an entertaining recurring role as Candadian Mountie Sgt. Buck Frobisher on the cult TV favorite "Due South," and the actor would readily employ his Canuck status to appear in a number of minor films set in or about his native country, usually of wildly varying quality. He returned to the land of the big-budget Hollywood comedy when director David Zucker tapped him to appear as the paranoid President of the United States in the amusing horror spoof sequel "Scary Movie 3."
