Biography

Not every child actor becomes successful, but those that do face numerous obstacles, most particularly whether they will be able to transform the essence of what makes them a success as a youngster into a full-fledged career as an adult. Many are able to make the transition through the awkward stages of puberty and develop into functioning grown-ups. (Think Jodie Foster or Kurt Russell) Unfortunately, others succumb to temptations and descend into a spiral of drugs, alcohol or worse. (Dana Plato and Bobby Driscoll, for example.) Still others make the most of their fifteen minutes of fame and move on to other careers in and out of show business (e.g., Brandon Cruz and Peter Billingsley). Whatever the future holds for actor Robert Iler, he already has made an impression as a gifted performer with his co-starring role on the hit HBO series "The Sopranos" (1999- ).
Born and raised in NYC, Iler was "discovered" at age six by talent agent Jeff Mitchell who felt there was just something ineffable about the slightly pudgy youngster and offered his card to the youngster's father. After consideration and a check to see if Mitchell was legitimate, Iler's parents agreed to allow him to represent their son and the agent soon booked a Pizza Hut commercial. While he enjoyed appearing on TV, Iler took a break for a couple of years, before returning full force to show business at age 10. He quickly landed his first film role as a bully who teases a classmate with Tourette syndrome in the pleasant independent film "The Tic Code" (1998). Following appearances in commercials for such companies as IBM and AT&T, Iler auditioned for and booked the role of Anthony 'A.J.' Soprano Jr., the only son and youngest child of a mobster in "The Sopranos". As the series went on to become a cultural phenomenon and critical darling, the young actor saw his screen time increase and his character go from relatively naive schoolboy to troublemaking teen. Iler also transformed from cute kid to handsome young man capable of carrying scenes with the best. So it was something of a shock to fans when it was learned that the actor allegedly had been involved in activities that were more in keeping with his onscreen persona. Arrested for purportedly assisting in a mugging and for marijuana possession, Iler faced up to fifteen years in prison if convicted.
