Carrie was born on October 21, 1956 in Los Angeles, California . She is the daughter Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. Her first film job was in Hal Ashby's Shampoo (1975). Two years later, she appeared in her most widely recognized role, that of Princess Leia in Star Wars. Since then, she has survived drug and alcohol dependency, a troubled marriage to singer-actor Paul Simon, and a number of movie flops such as Under the Rainbow (1981) and Hollywood Vice Squad (1986) . She is the author of the semiautobiographical novel "Postcards from the Edge." Director Mike Nichols had her write the script for the 1990 film adaptation (with Shirley MacLaine in the role based, at least in part, on Fisher's mother). She followed it with other novels, "Surrender the Pink" and "Delusions of Grandma."
