Charlotte Church
Biography Filmography Links Contact Galleries Date of birth: 21 February 1986, BEING an "angel" at the age of 12 is divine, but angelic status at 15 is neither wicked nor cool. Just ask Charlotte Church. "Wicked" and "cool" are currently the favourite words of the world's most successful soprano, but the "angel" tag -- earned thanks to her staggeringly successful 1998 debut album "Voice of an Angel" -- does not go down too well with her schoolfriends. "Me? An angel!" chuckles Charlotte, "just ask my mum about that." Three years is a long time in the career of a Cardiff schoolgirl. Since Charlotte's astounding voice first shook the classical music world, her albums - "Voice Of Angel", "Charlotte Church" and latest album "Dream A Dream" (an album of festive songs - recorded at Air Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra, which includes - a duet (the title track) with 12 year-old American singing sensation Billy Gilman) - have sold in excess of 7 million copies worldwide. Charlotte's new release is a VHS & DVD - which incorporates a live concert in Israel and fantastic footage of "behind the scenes" - entitled 'Charlotte Church In Jerusalem' - out on March 26th. It was filmed before an invited audience at the historic Tower of David in Jerusalem with the Ra'Anana Symphonette Orchestra. "The whole experience in Jerusalem was wicked, and one that I will always treasure" recalls Charlotte. Charlotte has met many famous people, including: George Michael, Elton John, Will Smith, David Bowie, Danny Devito, Robbie Williams, Ricky Martin, The Queen, President George W Bush, the former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hilary Clinton, The Prince of Wales and Pope John Paul II. When not travelling the world, Charlotte is surrounded by her very supportive family and attends an all-girls school. "My friends are all absolutely wicked, really cool. They help keep some reality in my life, and there's no jealousy at all". Charlotte inevitably spends time out of school, but has two tutors when she is on the road and studies for three hours' a day. She says Geography is her best subject, which is not surprising since she has experienced a lot of it first-hand. She's been to New York and LA numerous times, not to mention singing for the Pope at the Vatican; the Clintons in Washington; the presidential inauguation of George W Bush; a duet with Wyclef (at the Wyclef Jean Foundation concert - for underprivelged children) and - closer to home -- for the Queen at the opening of the Welsh assembly in Cardiff, the Prince of Wales at his 50th birthday party in London. It all began when she performed "Pie Jesu" on TV's "Talking Telephone Numbers" in 1997 at the age of 11, President of Sony Music Europe, Paul Burger, signed Charlotte to a multi-album deal on the spot, within minutes of her first visit to his office. "Voice of an Angel" made Charlotte the youngest artist ever to have a No 1 album in the UK classical charts, and also the youngest to have a top 5 hit in the UK album charts. That triumph was echoed in the US, where Charlotte became the youngest solo artist ever to achieve a Top 30 album in the US charts. In addition, the vocal prodigy was voted 'Artist of the Year' at the first Annual Classical Brits Awards in May last year. Charlotte's latest album 'Dream A Dream' has become the most successful Christmas album by a British artist in the American charts ever - and is the youngest ever British artist to have a Top 10 album in the States. Success has breed more success for Charlotte. She has recently been voted 9th most popular female vocalist in America; opened the Harrods sale; switched on the Oxford Street Christmas lights and performed at the White House Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. She has also sung - at the closing ceremony of the Rugby World Cup, appeared at the 1999 MTV Awards in New York, starred in an American TV hit show "Touched by an Angel", and made her acting debut in TV's "Heartbeat". I'll Be There (2003)
