Dina Meyer has been on the cusp for awhile. Just to the left of breaking through it seems. She had the lead in the fantasy film Dragonheart, a strong supporting role in Starship Troopers and up until recently seemed like she might be destined to be one of the big B-movie stars with films like Time Lapse and the purposefully campy Bats. Dina however will be seen on the big screen again soon with Eye See You (originally called Detox) with Sylvester Stallone. Stallone plays a cop who comes undone after witnessing a brutal scene on the job. He checks into a Detox that specializes in treating law enforcement officials. Once there he discovers that his fellow patients are being murdered one by one. The scary thing is, this film was slated for a release in March of 2000, almost two years ago at this writing. With a budget of $55 million is doubtless that we will eventually see this flick hit the big screen, if only to recoup its cost. Born December 22, 1968 in Queens, New York she is the middle of three children. Her father owns an auto repair shop back in Queens so perhaps that is where Meyer's picked up her street wise tomboyish style1of playing characters (such as Diz in Starship Troopers). At the early age of nine Dina began to do some modeling and her opportunities grew with her until she hit sixteen. By then she was sure a life as an actor was for her but her parents remained hesitant, wanting her to have degree to fall back on if things didn't work out. Unlike most actors, she followed through with her parents wishes and graduated in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in French. Now she was free to pursue her career, no matter how things would turn out. She began training at The Neighborhood Playhouse, in New York, where she studied Sanford Meisner's (Sanford Meisner On Acting - $10.40 at Amazon)acting techniques with Ron Stetson for three years. Studying there had her following some well known names like Sandra Bullock, Michael Douglas, Jeff Goldblum, Leslie Nielson and Diane Keaton just to name a few. In 1993 she landed her first role on TV, in the hit series Beverly Hills 90210. Shortly after this she nabbed the lead in the movie Johnny Mnemonic where she garnered some praise for the fact that she did a fair share of the stunts herself. Although the movie fell apart at the box-office, Dina was already wrapping another leading role, that of Kara in Dragonheart. Although a physically demanding role and one that would require her to act against air for much of the time pretending there was a dragon nearby this was merely a walk in the park compared to her next part. Starship Troopers would be Dina's most physical role to date. She may not have been the lead in this down n' dirty space bug hunt flick but she did manage what most would consider impossible. She lured Rico (Casper Van Dien) away from Denise Richards before her untimely demise in the film. Again, Starship Troopers did not perform as well as expected. Dina may have been in some big flicks with some large expectations but it would be a TV role that would give her more exposure than these movies combined. As luck would have it her talent agent also represents Matt LeBlanc and as such was able to tout Dina as a perfect person to play a small recurring role for a few episodes on Friends. Perhaps you remember her as Kate Miller, the actress who falls for Joey Tribiani but then leaves for a role in L.A. She also had a brief stint on Alley McBeal back in 1997. More recently Meyers has been nabbing some roles in more independent films (yes, believe it or not, Bats was an indie flick) along with some HBO-style1movies and a role in the TV series Secret Agent Man (2000). As for the future she has several films in the can (see filmography below) and will will hopefully be seen again soon when the powers that be in the studios decide to release Eye See You.
