Biography

Cool, composed, stunningly handsome brunette leading actress, almost exclusively on TV, whose steppingstone to fame was as one of three decorative demoiselle detectives whose boss was the always-offscreen voice of John Forsythe in the glossy, highly improbable action drama, "Charlie's Angels". Although the role of Kelly Garrett did not afford the opportunity for high-voltage histrionics, Smith brought to the series not only her lovely speaking voice but also a low-key charm to the series' less stressful moments. 5 Since the early 1980s Smith has kept very busy in a series of TV-movies and miniseries, often either biographical in nature or based on trashy best-sellers, including "Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy" (1981), "George Washington" (1984), "Florence Nightingale" (1985), "Windmills of the Gods" (1988), and "The Rape of Dr. Willis" (1991). Despite her modest dramatic range, Smith has nevertheless garnered a loyal following among TV viewers with her appealing serenity and slightly remote, muffled but nonetheless palpable sensuality. She kept in the public eye with a series of five "Christine Cromwell" TV-movie mysteries in 1989-90 and promoted a line of clothing marketed by K-Mart department stores and named after her ("The Jaclyn Smith Collection"). Twice a first runner-up in polls conducted by TV GUIDE to determine TV's most beautiful woman (losing the first to Joan Collins and the second to Kathie Lee Gifford, who teasingly requested viewers of her show to vote for her), it was not until 1991 that Smith finally won the accolade she had deserved all along.
