Kelly was born on February 13, 1968 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is of of Chinese, Hawaiian, and English descent. Her only sibling is an older brother who is a Captain in the US Army. Some of her interests include karate and ballet. She attended Kamehameha High School, which is restricted to youngsters of Hawaiian descent. Her first trip to the mainland was at age 16 with her mother. Her mother took her to see some famous historical landmarks like the Liberty Bell.
Hu became interested in modeling after talking to some of her friends who had done modeling assignments in Japan.she enterd and won the local Miss Teen USA pageant after which she went on to win the 1985 Miss Teen USA title. The the prize money paid for her move to L.A. and persue her acting career. Shortly after arriving in California she landed several commercials for products like Vidal Sassoon and Mary Kay Cosmetics. In Milan, Italy, however, she is best known for her role in a series of storyline commercials for Philadelphia Cream Cheese. With automatic entry into the Miss USA pageant (a benefit of holding the Miss Teen title), Hu ran as Miss Hawaii in 1993.
Her first acting role was in the television series Growing Pains. She later appeared in Tour of Duty, Melrose Place, Murder One and nearly 20 other series. Her theatrical motion pictures include The Doors, Surf Ninjas, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, and No Way Back. She also starred in Sunset Beach as Dr. Rae Chang, a love interest of Casey Mitchum (Timothy Adams). She also starred in Martial Law as Chen Pei Pei with Sammo Hung. And she played Michelle Chan in Nash Bridges.
Her latest movies include 'The Scorpion King' and 'X-Men 2'.
