Biography

Willowy yet strong, seemingly more delicate than her 5'7" height, Kim Delaney's career on television has seen her go from her debut in 1981 as virginal Jenny Gardner on ABC's sudser "All My Children" to joining the cast of ABC's "NYPD Blue" in 1995 as Det. Diane Russell, the cop who can handle it all, including recovering from alcoholism and steamy bed scenes with Jimmy Smits. Raised in Philadelphia, PA, Delaney was already modeling while in high school, and moved to NYC to sign with the Elite Agency soon after graduation. By 1981, she was on the covers of SEVENTEEN and GLAMOUR. At the end of that same year, she had joined the cast of "All My Children", portraying a sweet, innocent teen from a white trash family who falls in love with a rich All-American boy, Greg Nelson. It took more than three years for Jenny and Greg to make it to the altar, and America watched, enraptured. Soon after the characters took their vows, Delaney tired of the role and, with her contract up, elected to depart the series. 5Delaney tried her luck in feature films with "That Was Then...This Is Now" (1985), "Delta Force" (1986), "Campus Man" and "Hunter's Blood" (both 1987). A 1987 guest starring appearance on NBC's "L.A. Law" brought her to the attention of casting directors and in 1988 she joined the CBS series "Tour of Duty" as Alex Devlin, a wire-service reporter. After the series' demise in 1990, Delaney took time off to have a baby, then returned to feature films with "Hangfire" and "Body Parts" (1991). 5Delaney starred in several TV-movies before accepting an offer to appear on four episodes of "NYPD Blue" as Det. Russell, a co-worker with whom Det. Simone (Jimmy Smits) was going to have an affair during the key May sweeps period. The character and the relationship clicked with the audience, and Delaney was asked to join the cast full-time in the fall of 1995. Her character's recovering alcoholism as well as her ongoing relationship with Det. Simone and his occasional overprotectiveness became key parts of the "NYPD Blue" storyline. 5Delaney was formerly married to actors Charles Grant (1981) and Joe Cortese (1989-94).
