Biography

Martina McBride is a native of the small, quaint town of Sharon, Kansas, worked her way up the country music ladder and paid her dues in several ways before hitting it big on Music Row. She worked as a demo singer for several record labels, and also as a T-shirts salesperson for Garth Brooks. Her maiden name is Martina Schiff. Her dad, Daryl Schiff, was a wheat and cattle broker and her mom, Jeanne, was a homemaker. Her family had a band, called the Schiffters, where Martina sang as a child. This gave her a keen interest in music and performing.

Through experience singing demo tapes, she mailed hers off in 1990 to RCA executives. They liked what they heard, and her first hit, "My Baby Loves Me," went all the way to number 2 in 1993. Her followup hit, "Life Number Nine," went to number 6 on the charts early the next year. One of her most famous tunes was "Safe In The Arms of Love," went to number 4 on the charts, but that was due to the fact that Garth, George, and Reba all had hits above hers and it was rough going trying to top them. But she was in good company at least! But her signature song, "Wild Angels," went to number one in 1996, as did "Independence Day," later that year. In 1999 and 2000, some of her biggest singles hit the airwaves, including "Love's The Only House" and "I Love You" from her platinum selling cd Emotion.

The year 2001 is proving to be her biggest year yet, even compared to 2000. Awards and nominations are pouring in for her. Her concert tour dates are filling up, and TV and radio appearances by her dominate the airwaves.

She credits her biggest break to Garth Brooks, for whom she opened concerts on tour during his 1992 tour. She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1995.

Martina married John McBride, a musician and sound engineer, on May 15th, 1988. They have two daughters, Delaney Katherine and Emma Justine. They are active in many children's charities.
