Biography
Phoebe Cates followed in the footsteps of her entertainment
family. Her father and uncle are both television producers, and her cousin,
Gil Cates Jr., is also in the movie business.
She attended the School of American Ballet until a knee injury in 1977
caused her to quit. From there she went on to model and do some work in
commercials. But it was in 1982 she got her first break in film when Stuart
Gilliard offered her a role in his movie, Paradise. Several movies followed,
but sometime in 1997 she decided to take a break from acting in order
to raise her two children, Greta and Owen, by husband, actor Kevin Kline.
