Dawson as B'Elanna TorresRoxann Dawson (born September 11, 19581) is an American actress and director, best known as B'Elanna Torres on the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Dawson, real name Roxann Maria Caballero (also known as Roxann Biggs and Roxann Biggs-Dawson) was born in Los Angeles, California. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley earning a B.A. in Dramatic Art in 1980, Dawson's first professional acting job was in a Broadway production of A Chorus Line. She continued a stage career through the 1980s and 1990s, while occasionally landing minor film and television roles. In 1995, she was cast as the half-Klingon engineer B'Elanna Torres on Star Trek: Voyager. While working on Voyager, Dawson made her directorial debut with the episode "Riddles” (aired 09/1999). Dawson also directed another episode of Voyager and continued on to direct several episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. Roxann Dawson has also pursued a writing career; her first play, Passage Through the Heart, debuted in 1997 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She has also written (with Daniel Graham) a trilogy of science-fiction novels—Entering Tenebrea (ISBN 0671036076), Tenebrea's Hope (ISBN 0671036092), and Tenebrea Rising (ISBN 0671036114). She also continues to expand her television directing credits, filming episodes of such programs as Crossing Jordan, The O.C., and Lost. Dawson's first marriage was to Casey Biggs (Corat Damar from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). She is currently married to casting director Eric Dawson, and they have two daughters, Emma Rose Dawson, born on January 16, 1998, and Mia, adopted from China. Dawson is also a strong supporter of the Half the Sky Foundation, an organization devoted to improving the lives of the orphaned children in China. She auctioned off her Klingon ridges from Voyager to donate to the organization.
The character of B'Elanna Torres was much younger in age than Roxann Dawson. When Voyager started, (If B'Elanna's birthdate of 2349 is to be believed) Torres was 22 years old, when in fact Roxann was really in her thirties. This is not the first time in Star Trek an actress has been hired to play a character younger than they were. Kira Nerys, played by actress Nana Visitor was 26 when Deep Space Nine started, however Nana was really in her mid thirties at the time. Jesus the Driver (2004)
