Biography

Born in 1962, singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow grew up in Kennett, Mo., a rural town not far from Memphis, Tenn., and began playing piano around age six. With support from her parents, who were big band musicians, Crow began a career in music shortly after high school, moving to St. Louis to sing R&B covers. Crow broke into the industry in the 1980s and began performing as a backup singer with artists such as George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder and Rod Stewart.

She began a solo career in 1993 with her bluesy A&M debut, Tuesday Night Music Club. Thanks largely to the upbeat radio/MTV hit "All I Wanna Do," the album went multi-platinum.

Her eponymous 1996 follow-up was equally as successful with the radio hits "If It Makes You Happy," "Everyday is a Winding Road" and "A Change (Will Do You Good)." The album went multi-platinum despite the fact that retail giant Wal-Mart refused to carry the album because of the lyric, "Watch out sister, watch out brother / watch our children kill each other / with a gun they bought at a Wal-Mart discount store."

Crow spent much of 1997 and '98 on the road, playing select dates on the Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon tour and performing with the 1998 Lilith Fair.

She released her third album, The Globe Sessions, in the fall of 1998. Crow continued her winning streak when The Globe Sessions was awarded a Grammy for Best Rock Album.

Crow's latest album, Live From Central Park, was released in 1999.
